Gravel Watch Ontario - PPS Workshop

The Draft Provincial Policy Statement (PPS) which fundamentally affects how aggregates (stone, sand and gravel) are managed in Ontario has recently been released. During the next month the Provincial Government is holding workshops across the Province to review this Draft PPS.

Jones to the Minister of the Environment: Why no EA?

(Queen’s Park) –Today Sylvia Jones MPP, Dufferin-Caledon voiced her concerns in the Legislature
about the Ministry of the Environment’s lack of direction on the Environmental Assessment (EA) of
the proposed Highland Companies quarry application in Melancthon.


The full transcript of Jones’ statement is below:
Sylvia Jones: One year, one month, and one day ago on September 1, 2011 the Minister of
the Environment announced the proposed Highland Companies quarry application in my
riding of Dufferin-Caledon would be obliged to hold a full Environmental Assessment.


On November 29th last year, I questioned Premier McGuinty about the EA for the proposed
quarry. I asked for assurances from Minister Jim Bradley that the public would be consulted
on the terms of reference for the EA.

Disregard, Contempt, Open Defiance- Your government in action

Yesterday, the Environment Commissioner of Ontario issued the most scathing criticism I have ever seen from a government watch dog.

Gord Miller could not have been more critical in his annual report, citing the government’s contempt for environmental  rules, and the deliberate defiance of the Environmental Bill of Rights by many ministries. In previous years he has warned of the growing  intransigence on the part of  government but this year he has taken extraordinary steps to fully documented it in a standalone report.
