Federal assessment of quarry plan needed

This letter by Charles Hooker was sent to MP David Tilson and copied to "The Banner".

Dear sir,

Thank you for pressing the federal government to hold its own environmental assessment (EA) of The Highland Companies’ quarry.

I do not trust Ontario’s government to hold an unbiased EA for the quarry; it was only a week before the provincial election that the province’s minister of the environment announced a provincial assessment would be held.

He clearly made a political, not an environmental, decision.

Given the state of political affairs in Ontario, I fully expect the McGuinty government will shortly announce the quarry may proceed, despite current zoning of the land, despite massive appeals from most of the residents of Dufferin County, despite the environmental disaster that is readily predicable.

What can the Loyal Opposition do? They cannot overrule an administrative decision, and don’t dare force an election over a quarry.

We are therefore helpless unless the federal government imposes a less biased study.

Please hasten a federal government reversal of the decision made by your environment minister.

Charles Hooker,
East Garafraxa
