Subject: Highland Companies application - petition update

I just wanted to update you that on Wednesday, last week at Queen’s Park, I had the opportunity to table the petition, requesting a full Environmental Assessment of the proposed quarry in Melancthon, which was presented to me by our community, August 29th. This was my first opportunity to table the petition as it was the first day of regular proceedings at the Legislature since October’s election.

I support the petition and will continue to fight to ensure this application is held to the highest environment scrutiny. I will provide you with updates on this important issue as they develop.

David Tilson MP Dufferin-Caledon

Mr. Speaker, I have a petition signed by residents from all over Ontario concerned with the proposed mega-quarry in Melancthon township in Dufferin county. This will be the largest open pit quarry in Canada at over 2,300 acres. People are concerned that the mega-quarry threatens the Grand and Nottawasaga Rivers' watersheds, including various freshwater fish species.

They call upon the Government of Canada to conduct an environmental assessment under the authority of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act on the proposed Highland Companies' mega-quarry development.

Tilson asks government to produce details on quarry

Ottawa, ON – David Tilson, Member of Parliament for Dufferin-Caledon, on Thursday formally asked the Government to explain why it hasn't pursued his request for a federal Environmental Assessment to be undertaken on the proposed Melancthon mega-quarry.
