“Once the aggregates are removed from beneath prime agricultural land such as this, full rehabilitation is impossible.  The good drainage of „gravel-bottom‟ land is what makes the land so valuable as farmland, especially for higher value crops such as potatoes,” according to Slater.

“Just as with other corporate foreign owners of farmland, the real reason The Highland Companies owns farmland in Dufferin County, is for the financial benefit of its investors.  They will continue to develop the land in the manner that provides them with the greatest financial return, and with no consideration for protecting farmland or rural communities.  This is part of a growing trend not only in Canada, but around the world - the buy-up of vast amounts of farmland by huge multi-national investment firms,” said Slater.

Cattle Farmer Brings Megaquarry Fight to Collingwood

As NDACT’s chair, Cosack has criss-crossed the province, delivering the message that allowing the so-called megaquarry to go ahead will have profound effects on water, air, and food. While NDACT has been around for more than three years, originating out of a public meeting held in Honeywood in January, 2009, its cause has really been taken up outside of Melancthon’s boundaries in the last year since Highlands filed its application.

OCADU Stop The Mega Quarry Poster Winners Are:

 OCAD University 1st Year Design Students were given a project to design posters to Stop the Mega Quarry

 "Artists Against the MegaQuarry" awarded prizes for the top three poster designs, as well as for honourable mentions.

Their posters were on display from March 26 - April 2, 2012
